September 12, 2012: Fairfax Media has created a new multi-platform consumer marketing group to manage all its brands in its Metro Media division.

The move comes ahead of the launch of Metro Media's digital subscriptions model next year.

Leading the team will be Robert Whitehead who will take on the new role of Head of Marketing and Communication.

The scope of Whitehead's responsibilities will cover all aspects of consumer marketing, including brand, promotion, sponsorship, subscriptions acquisition, retention and communication.

The new team's first priorities will also include the launch of the new compact formats of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald early in 2013.

Previously, Whitehead was Director of Marketing and Newspaper Sales for The Sydney Morning Herald for seven years.

He led the marketing efforts of the multi-award winning SMH and Age apps for iPad as well as numerous smartphone app launches.

"The creation of this new consumer marketing group led by Robert Whitehead ensures we have the marketing skills and resources needed to take us to the next stage of Metro Media's development, which encompasses a raft of innovative projects and initiatives," Metro Media CEO, Jack Matthews, said.

Fairfax Metro Media's trade marketing unit will continue to be led by Chelsea Wymer as National Trade Marketing Director, who will continue to report to Metro Media Commercial Director, Ed Harrison.

Chelsea and her team will work closely with the new consumer marketing group.
