The essential marketing effectiveness reading list

On September 01, 2026 Research & Resources

Advertising effectiveness is one of our industry’s most debated and sometimes misunderstood disciplines. For those working in marketing, measurement, media planning or strategy, the volume of available material can be overwhelming, and not everything published carries equal rigour. This recommended reading list from the IAB Australia Ad Effectiveness Council has been created to cut through that noise.

The Council has come together to curate what they believe to be the most essential body of knowledge for anyone serious about understanding how marketing works.

Drawn from decades of collective experience, the recommendations span books, academic papers, industry whitepapers, practitioner playbooks and thought-leadership from respected names in the field, each selected for its rigour, depth and enduring practical value.

For each resource, you will find context on what the piece is best known for, guidance on how to apply its lessons to real-world decision making, and a personal recommendation from one or more Council members explaining why the work has mattered to them in their own careers.

The Council has also identified a set of organisations, think tanks, and current practitioners worth following on an ongoing basis. These voices represent some of the most credible current thinking available.

The principles of advertising effectiveness are long-established; what this list offers is a trusted pathway into them.

Although this list will be of value to anyone working in or adjacent to advertising effectiveness, it is offered with particular intent to those earlier in their careers. Juniors and entry-level professionals often enter an industry where established thinking is assumed rather than taught. This resource is designed to close that gap, in effect the reading list that many experienced measurement experts wish had existed when they were starting out.
